Guy Tillim - Avenue Patrice Lumumba

Tillim's Avenue Patrice Lumumba is extremely evocative. The images are still, but they purvey a message far more dynamic than their initial appearance. The exhibition's starting point is Patrice Lumumba, one of the first elected African leaders of modern times, winning the Congo election after independence from Belgium in 1960. Lumumba was emphatic of his opposition to the West's neo-colonial order and vision for Africa. This is the context for Tillim's project. His photographs display the presence and legacy of a departed colonial order. >
