Nicolo Degiorgis - The Hidden Islam

The north-east of Italy is a stronghold of the right-wing party, Northern League, which has gained popular support in recent times through anti-immigration campaigns. Migrant life in Italy is not enviable, and definitely not the most warmly received in Europe. Italian nationalism is strong and there exists popular and widespread support of Italian ‘values’. This has become especially strong with the arrival and 'encroachment' of 'other' foreign values. Attempts to collectivise Islamic rights are fraught with political problems and resentment amongst right-leaning Italian citizens.
.
Italy is home to more than one million Muslims, yet there remains only one official mosque. Instead, alternative make-shift places of worship have sprouted in industrial estates, car parks, warehouses, office blocks and basements.
.
The Hidden Islam aims to produce a narrative on the improvised mosques, seen throughout Italy. Nicolo Degiorgis is represented by the Italian photo-cooperative Contrasto.
