In this series of photographs Patrick Zachmann has created a strong narrative of the hidden face of economic catch-up: the push of a developing country to close the gap between themselves and the now developed states of the economic North. The series also shows the massive growing inequality where a 'dual society' has effectively developed. On the one hand we can see the literal increase in wealth through the ever growing skyrises, but on the other hand living conditions for those at the bottom have seemingly deteriorated. The annual migration of workers to and from cities at Chinese New Year is the biggest annual migration in the world. As of 2008, the UNDP estimate that more people now live in cities than in the countryside. This sequence of photographs nicely highlights this statistic and its associated problems.
