Nishant Shukla
This is a set of photographs produced by Nishant Shukla on a train journey from the Himilaya to the southern most tip of India. One reviewer of this series notes that 'Shukla modernises colonialist photography and invests it with a sympathetic and quiet restraint'. I think this sums the style up quite well. It certainly springs to mind the very simple and blunt portrait style of colonial photographers, but in a contemporary setting. I like how all of the subjects are photographed in the same place, it allows you to see the relationship of individuals with their immediate surroundings. Shukla tries to avoid a 'sentimental or repressive gaze', this is not meant to influence the image. The subjects remain remarkably neutral which is often very difficult to achieve.
